Our History
The Lakeland Sinfonia Concert Society has a history of over 55 years and we’ll be promoting our 400th concert in November 2023 as part of the 2023/24 season.
Originally known as the Kendal Chamber Orchestra, the Lakeland Sinfonia Concert Society (the trading name of Lakeland Sinfonia CIO, UK registered charity no. 1197362) has two objectives: first, to manage the Lakeland Sinfonia orchestra; and second, to present live orchestral classical concerts in Kendal.
The orchestra has developed constantly over the last 10 years, both in aspiration and achievement, and was recently judged to be ‘London standard’ by some visiting music lovers (from London).
The Kendal Chamber Orchestra originally played in Kendal Parish Church and Kendal Town Hall. The orchestra was renamed the Lakeland Sinfonia, and its series of concerts was augmented by other orchestras, notably the Northern Sinfonia (now the Royal Northern Sinfonia).
The society held a gala concert in May 1982 at the opening of Kendal Leisure Centre and the Westmorland Hall and continues to use the venue for many of its concerts.
